Beach Ed Reflection

Beach Ed

Boom! Crash! The waves are crashing together. We all went to Waihi Beach yesterday to learn about safety and how to stop rips. There were three Life Guards (two girls and a man) with us. We split off into groups (year 7 boys, year 7 girls, year 8 boys and year 8 girls). My group was with the head Life Guard who was one of the girls.

First, we learnt about how to stop rips and being safe around the water. The Life Guards made us remember a lot of things and did some quizzes to see if we were listening. They came over with two big cardboard boards with pictures of the beach and people at the beach. Some people were doing the wrong thing and we had to spot what was wrong and why.

Second, we went for a tour around the area and had a look at the Life Guard Tower and the IRB. IRB stands for Inflatable Rescue Boat that rescues people when they are stuck out really far behind the waves. The Life Guard Tower is a tower that has a few story's so they can watch over people in the sea and there were walky-talky's.

One of my favourite part of the day was the beach games that we played. We got to choose a game to play and we all chose Seaweed. It was really hard to run in the sand because it felt really fluffy! The next game we played was Beach Flags. You had to lay down and put your hands together and your head down and when the Life Guard said "go" you had to get up and run and try get the flag. The last person standing is the winner! We also did a relay where you had to save the other person from the other side.

And last of all, we all had a big swim in the ocean. It was not as cold as I was expecting but I was really scared of the crabs! It was a really nice day at the beach!

  • Discoloured water
  • Calm water
  • If you are surfing, don't surf near people that are swimming.
